I went to the post office the other day to mail a book. The man behind the counter asked what I did. I said I was a journalist and I covered the economy. His voice dropped to a whisper.
“Do you know what holding the economy back?” he said.
“No, what?” I replied.
“Ageism. Ageism is holding the economy back. I was employed for 12 years at Microsoft. When I got laid off I couldn’t get another job in tech. Finally, I got a job at the Post Office. It’s okay. Not complaining. But ageism is real.”
He had no idea what I did.
